Taiwan is located at the junction of the Eurasian Continental Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate.
Taiwan situates in Circum-Pacific Seismic Belt and thus earthquakes happen frequently.
The northwestward- moving Philippine Sea plate is closely related to the formation of Taiwan's topogrophy.
The speed of 8.2 cm annual movement of Philippine Sea plate also cause a series of faults in the East Rift Valley and the Central Mountain Range.
These faults are highly active and have caused many disastrous earthquakes in Taiwan’s history.
There are three main earthquake zones in Taiwan: western, eastern and north-eastern.
Earthquakes in western Taiwan are generally considered to happen less frequent, but cause more serious damage.
Earthquakes in eastern Taiwan are considered to happen frequently, and the hypocenters are usually deeper.
1999 Jiji earthquake
The earthquake occurred along the Chelongpu Faultin the western part of the island of Taiwan.
Damage caused by the earthquake included 2,415 deaths, 29 missing, 11,305 severely wounded, with 51,711 buildings completely destroyed, 53,768 buildings severely damaged, and a total of NT$300 billion (US$10 billion) worth of damage.
921 Earthqueake is a pain in so many Taiwanese's heart, but we also make a progress after that unforgettable disaster.
After that, Taiwan established the most extensive network of sensors and monitoring stations in the world.

介紹921地震教育園區
921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan
The 921 earthquake museum of Taiwan located in Wu-Feng County conserved the damage caused by Ji-Ji earthquake,a 7.3-magnitude devastating earthquake, such as collapsed school buildings, fault rupture and elevation of riverbank.
And thus the museum is a precious teaching material for natural science. All the construction of the museum was done by September 2007, and it included Chelungpu Fault Gallery, Earthquake Engineering Hall, Image Gallery, Disaster Prevention Hall, and Reconstruction Records Hall.
To make the ruined landscape and damaged structures stand out, the architect surround the geological changes with the five exhibition halls.
Following the visiting route, one can see how the fault passed though and study how the land was deformed.
Chelongpu Fault Preservation Hall:
In addition to those real landscape and terrain changes, the museum also preseve many images of and comparison pictures of current appearances and how they're looked in the past.
Earthquake Engineering Education Hall:
This Hall will help visitors understand the relation between earthquakes and buildings, introduce visitors to some of the principles involved in putting up a building that can withstand some of the effects of an earthquake so that visitors will come away better educated on how earthquakes happen and the importance of building to minimize their effects.
Image Gallery:
The Image Gallery was originally the Student Activity Center of Kuangfu Junior High School. Rebuilt after the quake, it displays photographs and audiovisual materials featuring the Chi-Chi Earthquake, and presents the memories of the earthquake from the angles of the humanities, society, and historical records.
Disaster Prevent Hall:
Prevent the possible disaster and getting ready for it far outweighs the value of repair afterward. It is the objective of Disaster Prevention Hall. The goal of the gallery is to give knowledge of refuge and rescue, and related information to the audiences, to establish the correct concept of the disaster prevention.
Reconstruction Record Hall:
The Reconstruction Record Hall documents the reconstruction efforts that have been done after the Jiji Earthquake. These display the tremendous achievements of the disaster relief and reconstruction work done by the government and the people. The outdoor track keeps extending interior, representing the idea of keeping running no matter how hard life is.
其他補充:. 草嶺地質公園 (雲林)
Caoling Geopark (Tsaoling Geopark), is located in Gukeng, Yunlin County and famous for its abundant natural landscape resources and the dynamic landform evolution of landslides, huge cliffs, waterfalls and potholes.
In 1999, 921 Earthquake happened and Tsaoling landslide occurred on the southwestern dip slope of the Geopark. This landslide is among the largest in Taiwan in terms of total area and magnitude. Consequently, a new landslide dam called Tsaoling Lake was formed.
The lake was filled with debris and rocky mud flushed down from the upstream during heavy rain. The rapidly changing landforms of the area demonstrate the sensitivity of the landform to natural power of quakes and rains.
Now, Tsaoling Geopark is used to be a good material for environmental education and landscape conservation.
