Located on the eastern edge of the Eurasian Plate and in the center of the East Asian island arc, Taiwan has a diversified topography that has developed unique and rich bio-clusters.
The diversified topogrophy of Taiwan granted the island with rich ecosystem and biological species. However, several species and habitats are rapidly disappearing due to the climate change and human development.
Therefore, the movement for national parks and nature conservation in Taiwan began in 1961, and so many reseachers and experts dedicated to establish national parks and monitor the data for long time in order to protect those endangered species and those fragile environment.
By the way,the first national parks were established in 1937, when Taiwan was under Japanese rule. Unfortunately, because of the WWII, the voice for protecting the natural environment was suspended. It is until 1972 when The National Park Law was passed the real first national parks were reestablished. That is Kenting National Park.
Up to day, there are 9 national parks in Taiwan, from northern to southern, and from marine to montain. The aim of national parks is to maintain the unique natural environment and biodiversity within the parks through effective operation, management and conservation.
In accordance with the National Park Law, trends in social development and characteristics of resources, national parks can be categorized into three types: natural, historical and recreational national parks.
Application Regulations and Notices
In nine of Taiwan’s National Park, Yushan, Taroko and Shuei-Pa National Park are mainly in mountain restricted area, and most famous mountain trails run through both ecological protection area and mountain restricted area. This is the main reason why visitors may need both Park Entry Permit and Mountain Permit to enter these areas.
Generally speaking, visitors can apply the permision online 2 months – 7 days before the entry date.
Except for Yushan, Taroko, and Shuei-Pa National park, other national park such as Alishan National park limits the number of people entering the park.
Sometimes the traffic control is also enforced. All people except those who work or stay at a hotel on Alishan with proper documents are barred from driving their cars into the area during the control time.
The same, travelers and visitors should apply to enter in advanced. Taking the total quantity control and the application measure can keep those conservation area from being overwhelmed by the streams of people. Also, living environment and life quality of residents in nearby area can somewhat be maintained.
